Poverty remains a major problem for families across Canada and The Salvation Army, as the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services works to reduce it through a vast array of programs and services. Nearly five million Canadians live in poverty today -- about one out of every six people and over one million of these are children. While exact national numbers are difficult to come by, even fairly conservative estimates indicate that tens of thousands remain homeless, a key indicator of the extent and severity of poverty. According to a Statistics Canada report, nearly 800,000 Canadians are dependent on drugs and alcohol, a key aggravating factor in the lives of many impoverished people. The breadth and depth of Salvation Army services allows it address all of these issues, combating poverty at the source and changing lives. Donating to The Salvation Army allows you to invest in the future of those living in poverty in your community. In one year, The Salvation Army in Canada:
Provides direct, compassionate, hands-on service to over 1.5 million people
Provides 6,300 shelter beds for the homeless each night, including accommodation for families
Serves 2.3 million meals to the hungry

This year's Christian Aid Week advert highlights the work we do in helping people prepare for the worst. You can't stop a hurricane, but you can help save lives by funding stronger buildings and installing early warning alarms. It's just one of the ways Christian Aid makes a real difference to the lives of millions of vulnerable people across the world. Help us continue our work by supporting us this Christian Aid Week: please donate what you can. Or why no take part by doing something else for Christian Aid Week?
